Making the Most of Daily News English Lessons

At Daily News English, we understand the value of using authentic news videos as powerful educational tools. Our carefully curated lessons provide a unique opportunity for your students to engage with real-world content while enhancing their language skills. 

Here are some tips to maximize the impact of our news lessons:

Hook Question and Activation of Prior Knowledge:

Begin the lesson by showing a picture related to the topic of the news video. Ask a thought-provoking question related to the picture to engage students' curiosity and activate their prior knowledge about the topic.

Video Viewing for General Understanding:

Show the news video to the students for the first time to give students a general grasp of the content. Encourage them to identify the main theme and overall context.

Vocabulary Activity:

Engage students in a vocabulary activity where they match key terms with their definitions. This equips them with essential vocabulary for the subsequent activities.

By doing the vocabulary activity after the first viewing of the video, students gain initial context and understanding. Later, the activity clarifies key terms, engages them actively, and improves vocabulary retention. This approach maximizes learning outcomes.

Video Viewing for Specific Details:

Have students watch the news video for the second time. This time, they should focus on identifying specific details and relevant information presented in the video.

True/False and Multiple-Choice Activities:

Following the second viewing, assess students' listening comprehension through True/False and Multiple-Choice activities. These exercises challenge their ability to discern accurate information from the video. (If necessary, the video could be shown a third time between these two activities.)

Discussion Activity:

Organize students into small groups of 2-4 or conduct a whole-class discussion. Use the provided discussion prompts to encourage students to share their opinions, insights, and thoughts about the topic presented in the news video.

Role-Play Activity:

Transition to the interactive role-play activity. Divide students into pairs or small groups as specified in each lesson. Follow the role-play instructions provided in the specific lesson, allowing students to engage in communicative scenarios related to the topic.

Reflective Closure:

Conclude the lesson with a whole-class discussion. This allows students to share their role-play experiences, ask questions, and gain insights from peers.

Independent Writing Task:

Assign our thought-provoking writing task as homework. This empowers students to express their thoughts, opinions, and creative perspectives based on the topic explored in the news video.
